Alanton is an older, upscale, residential neighborhood located in the northern part of Virginia Beach known as "Great Neck". It is an extremely sought after neighborhood because of the unique architecture, large property lots, and massive waterfront homes towards the back of the subdivision. The community was named for Alan McCullough, a prominent Virginia architect, but developed by his father. The McCullough family purchased the land in the early 1920s and the architect and his family lived in one of only three houses there at the time. Alanton is bordered by their sister subdivision; Baycliff, and is adjacent to the prestigious Cape Henry Collegiate School (K-12). Alanton Elementary is the VB public elementary school and it is actually located in the neighborhood! Alanton Elementary filters into Lynnhaven Middle School and First Colonial High School, home of the Patriots.
